Schnitzel Diabetic Service Dog

At Insulinic of Florida, we’re always seeking innovative ways to support our patients in managing their diabetes. That’s why we’re excited to introduce you to a remarkable team member: Schnitzel, our Diabetic Alert Dog. Schnitzel isn’t just any dog; he’s a specially trained Long-Haired German Shepherd whose role is to help diabetics detect changes in their blood sugar levels and potentially avoid serious diabetic events.

The Role and Importance of Diabetic Alert Dogs

Diabetic Service Dogs, like Schnitzel, play a critical role in the lives of those with diabetes. These dogs are trained to detect ketone changes through breath and sweat, indicating when blood sugar levels drop or rise dangerously high. With a nose 600 times stronger than a human’s, Schnitzel can alert his handler, Nick, to potential diabetic seizures or diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) attacks before they occur.

Training and Dedication: Schnitzel’s Journey with Canines4Hope

Born with an instinctive drive and keen senses, Schnitzel underwent intensive training at Canines4Hope in Palm City, Florida, where he learned to identify the scent of low and high blood sugar levels from breath and sweat samples, transforming him from a playful pup into a lifeline for his handler Nick. His exceptional ability has already helped prevent numerous diabetic events, proving that these dogs are truly more than just man’s best friend; they’re lifesavers.

Schnitzel and Nick: A Bond That Transcends Friendship

Schnitzel shares a special bond with Nick, our Director of Patient Care. As Schnitzel’s handler, Nick experienced firsthand the transformative effect of a Diabetic Alert Dog. Suffering from at least two seizures per year, Nick’s life dramatically improved with Schnitzel by his side. In the three years since they teamed up, Nick has had only one seizure, zero DKA episodes, and has managed to maintain an A1c level of 6.5.

Schnitzel is a favorite with patients fortunate enough to receive treatment while he is also visiting our treatment centers in Hollywood and North Miami Beach. They, too, have experienced a friendly sniff and even a bump to signal high blood glucose levels.
